A story that takes place in a fictional world...

It was the 1st of August.

That morning, when she awoke, the heroine found herself without any memories from before August 1st...... Everything, from the sort of life she lived, to the relationships she had, was a blank......

A young boy named Orion appeared in front of her, referring to himself as a "spirit." Under Orion's guidance, the heroine began the struggle to regain her memories. She searched her house for clues about her everyday life, and received a message on her phone...

What was displayed on the screen was an unknown name to her.

Now, she is asked to meet with him, a boyfriend whose name and face she doesn't know. In a position where who to trust is uncertain, the heroine must move in a way that her memory loss remains undetected by her partner. Because of this, the story becomes tangled in complex ways.

With no memories of "him," our heroine will write a new love story starting today......

The default first read and the one the game's menu steers you towards. Sets the otome-suit structure and the amnesia premise without asking the reader to carry too much of either yet.

~6h · 24 decisions · 3 endings

Spade · Ikki
The louder route — the one that spends the most time inside the café and the fandom that orbits it. Moves faster than Shin's and pays more attention to what attraction looks like from the outside.

~6h · 24 decisions · 3 endings

Clover · Kent
The route most readers remember fondest. Clinical on the surface, considerably kinder underneath — works hard at what the other routes take for granted.

~6h · 24 decisions · 3 endings

Diamond · Toma
The route with Amnesia's sharpest pivot and its heaviest content advisories. Worth reading third or fourth — the game is firmer ground by then and the route is doing more interesting work than its reputation suggests.

~7h · 24 decisions · 3 endings

Joker · UkyoUnlocks only after clearing the four suit routes (Heart, Spade, Clover, Diamond)
The route the rest of the game is for. Rearranges what the first four suits have said about the heroine's missing months; reads as Amnesia's real thesis and is the reason to finish the novel.

The otome that holds weight

Amnesia: Memories is the otome I hand to people who think otome is a genre that can't hold weight. The amnesia premise is a Trojan horse — it lets the game test the same heroine against five different relationships, and the test is not "which boy does she end up with" but "what does she do when she doesn't recognise the life she woke up in."

Toma's route is the one that divides readers, and it should.

Toma's route is the one that divides readers, and it should. The game is not asking you to endorse the relationship. It is asking you to read it clearly. That's rarer in this genre than it should be.

Four suits and a joker

The four-suit structure is the tidiest route architecture in the otome canon: Heart, Spade, Clover, Diamond, with Joker locked behind completion of the first four. Each suit corresponds to a world, not just a boy, and the heroine's amnesia carries different stakes in each — the routes are variations on a theme rather than parallel branches.

The Joker route is where the game shows its hand.

The Joker route is where the game shows its hand. Until you unlock it the framework feels schematic; after you play it, the schema turns out to have been load-bearing.

Orion is the real protagonist

Orion is the game's real protagonist and it takes the Joker route to admit it. The four-suit routes are each the heroine negotiating a relationship she does not remember choosing; Orion is the only figure present in all of them, and he is the one the game cannot let you forget.

Ukyo's route recasts the premise.

Ukyo's route recasts the premise. The loops are not narrative furniture; they are the thing being told. The game asks the heroine — and by extension the reader — what it means to keep waking up in the same life and making the same choices. The answer is not the romance.

The best first-otome

Shipping state: original PSP 2011, Vita port 2013, Aksys English release 2015 on Vita and PC, Switch 2021. The Aksys localisation is the canonical English read; Amnesia Later and Crowd are sequels, not expansions, and they ship separately.

Idea Factory / Otomate's output in this period is uneven; Amnesia is one of the stronger entries and probably the best first-otome for a reader who wants to understand the genre's grammar before tackling its longer books.

The heroine stays unnamed

The Aksys script is workmanlike. It is not as careful as their later otome releases (Collar × Malice, for example), and the cadence in Ikki's and Shin's routes flattens in places where the original carries more tonal shift between the boys' speech registers.

The heroine stays unnamed in English as she does in Japanese, which is a structural choice worth respecting — the player names her, and the cast refers to her obliquely. A localisation that had invented a default name would have unmade the premise. Aksys correctly left it alone.
